How to Paint Models!

Painting miniatures involves several key stages to achieve the best results.

There are various standards for painting miniatures, and while there isn’t a single set of rules, you can follow this general guide:

  • Basic Standard: Complete up to step 3.

  • Tabletop Standard: Complete up to step 4. This is the level many gamers use to paint large armies efficiently.

  • Display Standard: Follow all steps. This standard is typically reserved for special characters and favorite models, requiring more time and attention. Check out our "Next Level Guides" for tips on achieving this!

  • Pro Standard: This involves advanced techniques to create truly stunning models.

  • Gold Demon Standard: The pinnacle of miniature painting, this award-winning standard builds upon pro techniques to produce spectacular results.

Here’s a streamlined guide outlining each stage of the process:

1. Preparation

  • Cleaning: Wash the model in warm, soapy water to remove oils and dust. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
  • Assembly: Assemble parts as needed. For multi-part models, consider painting individual pieces separately for better access.

2. Priming

  • Apply a primer to create a base for paint to adhere. Choose a color that matches your intended paint scheme (black for darker colors, white for bright colors).

3. Base Coating

  • Use your primary color to paint the larger areas of the model. Thin layers are recommended for even coverage.

4. Detailing

  • Layering: Add layers of color to build depth, using lighter shades for highlights and darker shades for shadows. This step may involve multiple colors.
  • Washes: Apply a wash (a thin, dark paint) to recesses and details to enhance depth and contrast. This helps bring out details without extensive work.

5. Highlighting

  • Lightly dry brush or apply highlights to raised areas using lighter shades. This adds dimension and brings details to life.

6. Finishing Touches

  • Eyes and Details: Use a fine brush to paint small details like eyes, buckles, or other features.
  • Basing: Add texture or scenery to the base of your miniature for added realism. This can include sand, grass, or other materials.

7. Sealing

  • Apply a matte or gloss varnish to protect your paint job. This also helps unify the finish and prevents chipping.

8. Final Review

  • Inspect the miniature for any touch-ups or missed areas. Make any necessary adjustments or additions.
